Sleep and the Nervous System: The Most Underrated Intervention

Sleep is when the brain consolidates every gain made during the day. Practical steps for the families who need them most.

Sleep problems are among the most common — and most exhausting — challenges families face. They are also one of the highest-leverage places to work, because sleep is when the nervous system consolidates every gain made during the day.

Protect the hour before bed. Screens off, lights low, and the same short sequence every night. Predictability itself is calming to the nervous system.

Use deep pressure. Firm (not tickly) massage, a snug tuck-in, or a weighted blanket appropriate for your child’s size can help a seeking body settle.

Mind the daytime. A child who has had enough movement and sensory input during the day sleeps better at night — the pillars work together.

If sleep does not improve after consistent routines, talk to your practitioner. Sleep is too important to accept as unfixable, and there are more tools available than most families are told.
