Understanding the Three Pillars: Energy, Sensory, and Movement

Understand the "why" behind what helps your child — in plain language, one topic at a time. Autism is a lifelong developmental difference that can shape communication, sensory experience, learning, behavior, and connection.
It does not look the same in any two people. Understanding autism begins by looking beyond the diagnosis and learning how each individual experiences the world. Everything here is written for families first and reviewed by clinicians.
Autism is called a spectrum because it includes a wide range of strengths, differences, and support needs. One person may communicate through conversation, while another may use pictures, gestures, typing, sign language, or a speech-generating device. Someone may live independently in certain areas while needing substantial support in others.
Support needs can also change across settings. A person who communicates comfortably at home may find speech difficult in a noisy classroom, unfamiliar workplace, or stressful medical appointment. A diagnosis offers useful context, but it does not tell us everything about the individual.
Communication is much larger than spoken language. It includes facial expressions, movement, gestures, behavior, pictures, signs, writing, typing, and augmentative and alternative communication, commonly called AAC.
The first goal should not always be producing more words. It should be helping the person communicate needs, choices, discomfort, ideas, boundaries, and emotions in a reliable way. Speech may develop alongside other communication methods, but every person deserves access to communication now.
Autistic people may process sound, light, movement, touch, taste, smell, temperature, and internal body signals differently. Some sensations may feel unusually intense. Others may be difficult to notice, leading a person to seek additional movement, pressure, sound, or visual input.
Sensory overload can make communication, decision-making, learning, and emotional regulation more difficult. Adjusting the environment, providing sensory tools, allowing movement, or offering a quieter space can reduce distress and create more opportunities for participation.
An autistic person’s abilities may develop unevenly. Someone can have an advanced vocabulary while struggling to begin a daily task. Another person may understand much more than they can express. Skills involving attention, planning, flexibility, organization, and transitions can require additional support.
Clear instructions, visual schedules, predictable routines, smaller steps, and practice in realistic settings can make learning more accessible. The goal is not to lower expectations. It is to provide the structure a person needs to understand what is happening and participate successfully.
Behavior is often a form of information. A person may be trying to escape overwhelming sensory input, communicate pain, avoid an unclear task, regain predictability, request attention, or express a need they cannot communicate another way.
Instead of beginning with “How do we stop this behavior?” it is often more helpful to ask, “What is making this difficult?” and “What might this person be communicating?” Understanding what happens before, during, and after a behavior can reveal safer and more respectful ways to respond.
Sudden or significant changes should not automatically be attributed to autism. Pain, illness, constipation, sleep disruption, medication effects, anxiety, or another medical concern may also affect behavior and should be discussed with a qualified professional.
Autistic development does not always follow a straight or predictable line. Progress may happen quickly in one area and slowly in another. A skill may appear in a familiar setting but remain difficult around new people or in a different environment.
Meaningful progress includes more than completing a task. It can mean communicating more effectively, requesting help, recovering from overload, using a skill in more than one setting, participating with less distress, or needing fewer prompts.
Comparison with another person’s timeline rarely provides the full picture. The most useful comparison is between where the individual began, what matters to them now, and what support helps them move forward.
The purpose of support is not to make an autistic person appear less autistic. It is to help the person communicate, stay safe, care for themselves, build relationships, pursue interests, participate in the community, and exercise greater control over their own life.
Useful goals respect the person’s comfort, communication, preferences, and right to say no. They focus on skills that improve everyday life rather than forcing eye contact, eliminating harmless movement, or rewarding quiet compliance.
The right support looks different for every person. It may include family strategies, school accommodations, AAC, speech-language services, occupational therapy, mental-health care, behavioral support, medical care, community programs, or practical tools used at home.
