Autonomic Nervous System
The part of the nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as breathing, the heartbeat, and digestive processes. It divides into sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest) branches.

Dysregulation
A state where the nervous system is overwhelmed and struggling to manage sensory input or emotional responses effectively.

Interoception
The sense of the internal state of the body, including hunger, thirst, heart rate, and internal temperature.
M
Mitochondria
The "powerhouses" of the cell, generating most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions. Crucial in the "Energy" pillar of our protocols.
Moro Reflex
An infantile reflex normally present up to 4-5 months of age as a response to a sudden loss of support. Retained primitive reflexes can interfere with later voluntary movements.

Neuroplasticity
The ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning, experience, or targeted sensory input. This is the physiological basis for developmental change.

Proprioception
The sense of self-movement, force, and body position. It helps us understand where our body is in space without having to look at it, heavily reliant on receptors in the muscles and joints.

Sensory Overload
When one or more of the body's senses experiences over-stimulation from the environment, often resulting in an intense fight-or-flight response.
Stimming
Self-stimulatory behavior. Repetitive body movements or repetitive movement of objects used to self-regulate sensory input. We view stimming as a necessary regulatory tool, not a behavior to be suppressed.

Vestibular System
The sensory system that provides the leading contribution to the sense of balance and spatial orientation, located in the inner ear.
